10 Ways to Nurture Others and Yourself

To nurture is to make ready for new growth. We can contribute to others' growth in many areas: physical, intellectual, social, moral, and spiritual. However, our shaping force must be applied in juxtaposition to our own tendency to become diverted and distracted. You cannot save a drowning child if you are drowning yourself.

Our nurturing role towards others is a giving role, a sharing role - not an imposing role. It is not for us to impose our values and beliefs on others but rather to make them available to guide and inspire. We may seek to direct and steer but ultimately it is others who must choose their thoughts and actions, not us.

Through our leadership example, our positive role modeling and active mentoring, we are offering both our greater and lesser virtues and values to be used by others to affirm or reject as their own.

You need not be perfect or expert in any way. Simply be available to others as yourself. Your reflection in the mind's eye of those you engage will be enough to cultivate a perennial harvest of learning, growth, and development in others.
  1. Be aware that you are a role model to others – polish yourself up a bit each day.
  2. Nourish your own self-esteem – reflect on your contributions to the well being of others.
  3. Assist in the education and development of others – teach, advise, and guide.
  4. Offer to mentor someone in need of development.
  5. Give guidelines to others to prevent the development of harmful habits.
  6. Confront harmful, destructive behaviors – show people alternatives.
  7. Give kids a good head start – spend time with them as a role model.
  8. Offer yourself to the development of your local community – volunteer your time to a chosen cause.
  9. Protect and defend those in need – usher in others to help.
  10. Be a part-time foster parent, or sibling, or child – adopt or be adopted yourself, at least informally.
